Why we Fall in Distraction

Whenever we are bored or too busy, we adopt some habits to entertain ourselves, And these habits later become a distraction for us. We fall into Distraction because these habits prevent us from getting bored. There are some common habits that distract us- spending time on social media, playing online video games and having online chatting with friends. Nowadays these habits are common, but if these sources are not available then also we find other things that first entertain us and then a distraction for us.

Why some habits become distraction

First thing we have to understand is that Distraction is not external, it is internal. It means that we cannot blame a particular source like Smartphone or a particular habit for our distraction. It is all about priority, if these habits become our first priority then these are distractions. But if your work is your first priority then these habits will never become a distraction for you.

Now you gave first priority to your work and you decided that first you finish your work then if you have time you indulge in these habits. But remember that during your work you still think that after work you play games or watch YouTube, Instagram etc. then these are distractions again, because now these habits occupy your attentional space, and because of this you aren't able to focus on your work with high intensity.

Benefits of these Habits

Nowadays common habits of distraction are spending time on social media, playing online video games, having online chatting with friends and some people are interested in playing physical games. All these habits have some benefits like on social media you join their creator program and earn by monetizing your account, online games also improve your focus and decision making power(if the game is not violent) and playing physical games benefits your health.

But these habits become a distraction when you give them first priority and I already explain what actually means of this first priority.

Why we adopt these Habits

The more bored we feel, the more entertainment we need. And the habit which entertains us the most later becomes the biggest distraction for us.

So when we feel bored we start doing something which prevents us from getting bored and later it becomes a distraction for us. An experiment is conducted on a group of people. They were locked in an empty room where there was only one switch and they feel a slight current when it was turned on. And the results turned out that after some time people start playing with that switch in order to prevent themself from getting bored. That's why Distraction is not external, it is internal.

The best thing you can do is that you start enjoying your boredom moment. You have to do your boredom task with your full attention.

Make habits a strong Identity

This thing will help you, so you can easily decide your priorities. If you feel that some of your habits are the cause of destruction for you then you have to do this. Make some proper guidelines for your particular habit. And not only follow these guidelines but make it a part of your personality, make it your strong Identity.

For Example- if you think your mobile phone distract you then make some guidelines like you don't touch your smartphone before 12PM. And make it your identity, identity means that you feed this information in your subconscious mind that you even don't touch your smartphone before 12PM.
